Applications Open for the 2026–27 Human Rights Advocates Program at Columbia University

The Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) at Columbia University has officially opened applications for the 2026–27 Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP). This prestigious fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity for grassroots human rights defenders from across the world to strengthen their knowledge, expand their skills, and connect with global networks of activists, policymakers, and academic experts.

About the Human Rights Advocates Program

Established in 1989, HRAP is one of the longest-running and most respected capacity-building programs for frontline human rights advocates. It is uniquely positioned at Columbia University and further benefits from New York City’s status as an international center for diplomacy, NGOs, and global human rights organizations.

HRAP is designed to equip advocates with tools and insights that elevate their impact in their home communities. The program provides:

  • Academic training through participation in selected Columbia University courses

  • Skill-building workshops led by experts from leading human rights organizations

  • Mentorship from scholars, practitioners, and advocacy professionals

  • Networking opportunities with NGOs, UN bodies, policymakers, and funders

  • A collaborative space for reflection, knowledge exchange, and planning future campaigns

Throughout the program, participants share real-world experiences, analyze their strategies, and engage with peers from diverse regions and movements. This creates an environment where advocates can refine their advocacy plans and strengthen long-term impact.

Global Impact and Alumni Network

Since its founding, HRAP has welcomed over 350 advocates from 100 countries. Many alumni have gone on to:

  • Lead major international and national human rights organizations

  • Serve in government institutions and at the United Nations

  • Teach and research at universities around the world

  • Build grassroots movements defending human rights in challenging contexts

The collective influence of HRAP alumni is remarkable—reaching millions of people through campaigns, community initiatives, and global advocacy efforts.

Who Should Apply?

HRAP is designed for human rights advocates working at the grassroots or community level, especially those focusing on challenges within the Global South. Applicants should be committed to long-term change and eager to strengthen both strategic thinking and practical skills.
