ANOTHER EMERGING DISASTER OF HUNZA GB Written By : Abdullah Shah |
The shortfall of electric power and intermittently break down is not a current developed issue across Pakistan rather all the previous governments failed to overcome upon this substantial problem of the nation. There are abundance of areas in our country where the people are incessantly bearing non availability of electricity and this colossal issue has become very distressful and dilemma for the populous especially for newly established District of Hunza. This year Hassanabad stream has become standstill Owing to the distention of the glacial in the valley and all the hydropower units generating electricity to these areas has been shut downed and ironically the local administration omitted to make emergency alternative course of action for arrangements of electric power generation to fulfil the requirements of the habitants of these areas.
The representatives of Hunza district always brought prevailing dilapidated situation into the notice of local administration including the President of Pakistan Arif Alvi and many other dignitaries of the country while they were here on a short visit of Hunza. Despite extending their complete assurance yet nothing initiative has been taken so for on behalf of local government as well as the aforementioned VVIPs to solve the severe crises of electric power in Hunza district where it was mandatory to quest a solution on priority basis. Somewhat the aboriginals cannot understand the indispensable reasons why the local Government failed to contemplate their attention on those power generation projects which has already been planned to erect in numerous places of GB especially in district Hunza.
Albeit, it discerns the government is not willing to facilitate the people of the area and it is not their first priority to get rid of emerging problems of remote societies. It was known to this writer that most of the existing and future planned electric power projects are located in the outskirt and remote areas of Gilgit-Baltistan where in the peak season of summer the nullahs and streams remaining flooded and in contrast in winter season owing to freezing temperature the flow of water mitigated to its lowest level as inference difficult to obtain appropriate electric power from present existing power stations. The file work shows to overcome on such problem of the dwellers of Hunza the concern organization has already surveyed and identified some sites near Ganish Bridge and Attabad Lake and recommended to construct low head hydro generation projects costing to 300.00 million and 200.00 million accordingly.
Nevertheless, owing to anonymous reasons these projects including many other essential projects are still pending and succumb to red-tapism. We already discussed the small hydro powers in the nullahs are not successful in the long terms because the water flowing in these nullahs remain turbid & mudded in the summer and freezing in the winter which makes unrepairable damages to the power generating units and has to replace or repair at the culmination of every season. Therefore, we suggest and invite the incumbents of the Federal Government to academically deliberate upon the prevailing fact and behest the GB Government instead of building small hydro power stations ought be contemplate on erection of middle size i.e. 400 to 600 megawatts power stations on the main rivers of GB. For instance Attabad Lake is most suitable place for such sort of project where available sufficient and clean water round the year.
Beside it is geopolitical and topographic importance Hunza has always remain very dominant position owing to its cultural heritage, picturesque and stunning natural spots on the map of the word in general and in particular on the map of our country. In addition to the aforementioned facts Hunza remained a kingdom for many centuries and after invading and occupation of British diarchy Government it is still remained an independent state till 1974s takeover by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto for political reforms. The boundaries of this allure and largest district of GB is strewn over 10,109 square kilometers across and overwhelm with abundance of natural minerals. Albeit, it is tale of woe that apart from other inadequate planning’s in numerous areas of activity our local authorities also paid no heads to quest a solution of emerging problems and kept the people of Hunza devoid even from it is basic facility of the modern time alike electricity. Whereas, it was mandatory and responsibility of the previous and present governments that such type of all incredible and imposing places situated rather ambit areas or along sides of the cities rest of the country ought to be furnished with all tourist attraction provisions so the tourism industry which has always paying a key role in the economy of the country should be put on the road of progression.
