"Say NO to Suicide"

Written By :  Abida Nasreen
Suicide is a critical and intricate health matter that cannot be attributed to a single cause. It occurs when individuals purposefully inflict violence upon themselves, often as an escape from profound pain and suffering. The aftermath of such acts extends harmful effects to individuals, families, and communities. Alarming statistics reveal suicide as the second or third leading cause of death among teenagers globally.

Annually, approximately one million individuals worldwide lose their lives to suicide, with 10-20 million attempting suicide and facing severe consequences. In Asia, high suicide rates in a handful of countries contribute significantly to the global numbers, accounting for 60% of the world's suicides. This translates to 60 million individuals affected by suicide or attempting suicide. Unfortunately, compared to Europe and North America, Asia tends to pay less attention to this intricate issue.

In Pakistan alone, between 14 to 35 people end their lives daily. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated a suicide rate of 2.9 per 100,000 people in Pakistan in 2016, with over 5,500 reported cases. However, this rate continues to rise. Gilgit Baltistan, particularly in Hunza and Ghizar valleys, witnesses an alarming increase in suicide cases, despite its rich culture and values.

While pinpointing specific reasons for suicide is challenging, depression emerges as a common factor, especially among the youth. Issues such as academic pressure, financial struggles, family expectations, and failed relationships contribute to this mental state. The pressure to meet high expectations or the inability to accept failure can lead to severe consequences.

Preventing suicidal thoughts involves acknowledging failure as part of life, learning from it, and encouraging resilience. Suicides due to financial struggles and debts are prevalent among adults managing families. High debts and business losses can lead individuals to believe that ending their lives is the only way out.

Relationship issues, both in love and marriage, also contribute to suicide cases, particularly among emotionally charged young individuals. Misunderstandings, family conflicts, and societal pressures further aggravate these thoughts. Harassment, mental and physical abuse, and the harsh realities of society also force individuals into contemplating suicide.

Despite the grim picture, there is hope. Overcoming this growing issue requires utilizing our independence responsibly, focusing on personal growth, accepting others, prioritizing family and career, and fostering mutual respect and understanding. By adhering to these principles, we can combat suicide, a practice forbidden in Islam and considered a grave sin.

Join the campaign "Say No to Suicide" and contribute to making Gilgit Baltistan a suicide-free region. Let us unite to love, understand, and respect one another, striving towards a healthier and more compassionate society.

Thank you!
