Location: Germany. There is also an opportunity for Master scholarships at local universities as part of the KAAD Germany Fellowship Programme.

Eligible Fields of Study:

While there is no specific subject preference, the selection board tends to prioritize courses and subjects deemed significant for the applicant's home country. This inclines towards "development-oriented" studies, although other fields such as cultural, philosophical, and linguistic studies are not ruled out.

About the Award:

The KAAD Scholarship Program is designed for post-graduates and academics residing in their home countries with professional experience, interested in pursuing postgraduate studies or research stays in Germany. Administered by regional partner committees comprising university professors and church representatives, applications are typically submitted to the committee of the applicant's home country.

Type: Postgraduate (Masters and PhD) scholarship under the KAAD Germany Fellowship Programme.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the KAAD Fellowship, applicants must:

Originate from a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or Latin America, and currently reside there.

Hold a university degree and possess professional experience from their home country.

Intend to obtain a master's degree or a PhD at a German university or undertake a post-doctoral research project (2-6 months for established university lecturers) at a German university.

Be Catholic Christian (or belong to a Christian denomination). Candidates from other religions can apply if proposed by Catholic partners and demonstrate commitment to interreligious dialogue.

Have German language proficiency before commencing studies (KAAD can provide a language course of max. 6 months in Germany).

Selection Criteria:

KAAD primarily awards scholarships to lay members of the Catholic Church, with a preference for Catholic applicants. However, a limited number of scholarships are also available for Protestant Christians, Orthodox Christians (especially from Ethiopia), and Muslims. Catholic priests and religious individuals are eligible only in rare cases.

Expectations from KAAD:

Above-average academic performance in studies and research.

Studies or research oriented towards permanent reintegration in the applicant's home region.

Demonstrated religious and social commitment, along with a willingness to engage in inter-religious dialogue.

Value of Scholarship: Recipients of scholarships for Germany under S1 are supported by KAAD with Visa formalities, flights to and from Germany, language training in Germany before studies commence, among other benefits.
