Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program 2024
The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) for the year 2024 is a unique opportunity provided by the World Bank, an international financial institution dedicated to supporting the development efforts of low- and middle-income countries. Established alongside the International Monetary Fund in 1944, the World Bank has been pivotal in shaping the economic landscape of member countries.
Program Overview:
The JJ/WBGSP aims to empower citizens of specific developing countries, equipped with relevant professional experience and a commitment to their countries' development. This scholarship program targets individuals applying to master’s degree programs in development-related fields.
Subject to funding availability, the JJ/WBGSP offers scholarships for 52 Participating Master’s Programs across 27 universities globally, covering regions such as the U.S., Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan. These programs span key areas of development, including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.
Note: Only candidates admitted to one of the 52 Participating Master’s Programs are eligible to apply for the JJ/WBGSP Scholarship in 2024.
Benefits:
The JJ/WBGSP scholarship provides recipients with the following benefits:
Economy class air travel: Scholars receive two-way airfare between their home country and the host university at the beginning and end of the scholarship period, along with a US $500 travel allowance for each trip.
Tuition coverage: Full coverage of tuition for the graduate program.
Medical insurance: The cost of basic medical insurance obtained through the university is included.
Living expenses: A monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses on campus during the scholarship period. The amount varies based on the host country.
Note: All JJ/WBGSP scholarships cover the duration of the graduate program or two years, whichever is less.
The JJ/WBGSP scholarship does not cover:
- Visa application costs
- Expenses for scholars’ family members
- Extra-curricular courses or training
- Courses not meeting the minimum credit requirements for the graduate degree
- Language training not provided by the graduate program
- Additional travel during the study program
- Expenses related to research, educational materials, field trips, workshops/seminars, or internships
- Educational equipment such as computers
- Resident permit fee
Eligibilities:
To be eligible for the JJ/WBGSP scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a national of a World Bank member developing country.
- Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
- Be in good health.
- Hold a bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree earned at least 3 years prior to the Application Deadline date.
- Be employed in development-related work in a paid full-time position at the time of submitting the scholarship application. Have at least 3 years of paid development-related employment since earning a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent university degree) and acquired within the past 6 years from the date of the application deadline.
- Be admitted unconditionally for the upcoming academic year to at least one of the JJ/WBGSP participating master’s programs located outside of the applicant’s country of citizenship and country of residence.
- Not be affiliated with the World Bank Group or a close relative of World Bank Group staff.
Note: Individuals who previously declined or did not graduate from a JJ/WBGSP scholarship are not eligible to apply again.
