The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is an initiative by the World Bank, an international financial institution that supports low- and middle-income countries in undertaking capital projects. Comprising the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank focuses on development-related projects and aligns its strategies with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Program Overview:

The JJ/WBGSP is designed for citizens of specific developing countries with a track record of professional experience contributing to their nations' development. The scholarship targets individuals seeking admission to master’s degree programs in development-related fields.

Subject to available funding, the JJ/WBGSP offers scholarships for 52 participating master’s programs across 27 universities worldwide, encompassing regions such as the U.S., Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan. The key focus areas include economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.

Applicants must ensure their admission to one of the participating master’s programs to be eligible for the JJ/WBGSP scholarship. The link to the application form will be provided only to shortlisted candidates by participating universities.

Benefits:

The JJ/WBGSP scholarship covers:

1. Economy class air travel between the home country and the host university at the beginning and end of the study program, including a $500 travel allowance for each trip.

2. Tuition for the graduate program and basic medical insurance.

3. Monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses while on campus.

4. The scholarship duration covers the entire graduate program or two years, whichever is less.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must:

1. Be a national of a World Bank member developing country.

2. Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.

3. Hold a bachelor’s degree earned at least 3 years before the application deadline.

4. Be employed in development-related work in a paid full-time position at the time of application.

5. Have at least 3 years of paid development-related employment since earning a bachelor’s degree.

6. Be admitted unconditionally to one of the JJ/WBGSP participating master’s programs outside their country of citizenship and residence.

7. Not be affiliated with the World Bank Group or have close relatives working in the organization.
